In all our books we have stressed that the Canada Revenue Agency is not the best source of information to help you sort out a tax problem. For one thing, they have a conflict of interest in suggesting what action you should take when they are pursuing for collection of tax. More important, a front line CRA agent is not the most reliable source of information … if you can even get your call answered.
The Auditor General apparently shares our position. In a report released last week, the Canada Revenue Agency received a failing grade for accessibility. More than half of inbound calls to CRA general enquiries lines fail to reach a live agent. And almost 30% of the time the answers provided to taxpayer’s questions was incorrect. Gradewise, that a C minus.
